Black grassroots organizations launch an agenda on the best way to enhance the lives of Black individuals in Milwaukee County | WUWM 89.7 FM

The MKE Black Grassroots Community for Well being Fairness launched a Community Change Agenda on the Milwaukee Space Technical School Tuesday. It’s geared toward bettering life situations and enhancing the well-being of Black households and communities in Milwaukee County.

The community contains Black religion leaders, activists and leaders of Black-led grassroots organizations. The community is funded by the Zilber Household Basis by means of UW-Milwaukee’s Zilber College of Public Well being.

The agenda was fashioned to deal with the influence of COVID-19 on Black households, the legacy of underinvestment in Black neighborhoods, individuals and establishments, and the structural and systemic racism in Milwaukee.

Quinton Cotton is the managing member of QDC Analysis and Coverage Consulting Group, LLC, and a member of the community’s management. He mentioned it’s time to maneuver the group in a special route. Cotton shared the approaches that the agenda is grounded in.

“The primary [focus area] is social justice: the view that everybody deserves equitable, financial [and] political social rights [and] alternatives — the absence of social inequity. Two, therapeutic justice. Cotton mentioned the agenda additionally focuses on Black liberation, which he defines as a company of Black group energy to finish abuses towards Black individuals, impartial of colonial programs and pondering, and to protect Black cultural id.

The remaining approaches are systemic change, which entails understanding the foundation causes of disparate situations in Milwaukee at the moment, and the Black cultural lens: understanding the values of Black individuals from the angle of Black individuals.

Jeff Roman is the director of Milwaukee County’s Office on African American Affairs. He mentioned the agenda creates actual, actionable steps that may shift the paradigm to provide energy to Black Milwaukeeans.

Roman mentioned it builds on generations of labor that Black Milwaukee leaders and organizations have finished to enhance the lives of Black Milwaukeeans.

“Over are the times of this top-down strategy, even from Black folks in excessive locations. It has to begin from these on the bottom. And we as authorities, now we have communities, we as system leaders, now we have to spend money on constructing the management — the organizational and the advocacy capability of our grassroots,” Roman mentioned. “Black-led leaders on the bottom who’ve been, will proceed, and can at all times be the forefront, the vanguards, of Black-led social change in our communities.”

The Group Change Agenda makes suggestions in areas together with well being fairness, financial well-being and security.
